System Update File Transfer Transferring Media Files Mtp

broken image

It is frustrating to find that your Android device is not recognized as USB driver when you want to transfer files between phone and PC or recover data from Android phone. While the result is similar, the causes and solutions may vary from case to case. Similar symptoms or notifications, like 'USB device not recognized', 'PC not recognizing Android phone', or 'USB device not detected but charging', may occur on different devices. Please check following solutions to fix Android USB device not recognized on Windows problem.

Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) is mandatory to have when you are transferring files from your phone to the system. The problem starts when MTP stops working and leaves you with the 'MTP USB Device Failed' error message. However, you don't need to worry as our experts' have a handful of real-time fixes for this issue.

  1. Here's another explanation of why a tablet/phone might go into MTP transfer while charging in a wall socket- The tablet will only reliably charge (and thus no red 'X') when plugged into the special wall adapter, because the adapter is modified to deliver a higher current output than a computer's USB hub or a generic USB power adapter will deliver.
  2. O From My Computer view, select from the drop-down and locate the file you would like to transfer. Note: You can transfer several files at once by selecting them while pressing the Ctrl key. O Drag and drop the selected file from the My Computer view to the Mobile phone view. O Click the button located in between the two zones.
  3. You just install jmtpfs (via sudo apt-get install jmtpfs). After connecting your phone via USB, enable the MTP file transfer on your phone and it will show up as USB device on your computer. You can then access the whole file system (and not only the pictures, as with PTP) of your Android device.

Try Following Measures First
Here are some small tips that might help and won't take a long time even if not working.

  • Try a new USB cable and another computer. Some cables are power only.
  • Connect Android device to PC directly instead of through USB hub.
  • Reboot phone and connect to PC while in Airplane mode.
  • Remove battery and SIM card, and wait a while, then put them back and reboot.
  • If Windows detects your phone but doesn't find any content, you should unlock your phone screen and try again.

If above tricks don't work for you, please try solutions below.

Solution 1. Connect Android to Computer as MTP to Fix Charging Only Problem

Android device can be connected as Media device (MTP), Camera (PTP), USB flash drive, Charge only, etc. If you want to transfer files between phone and PC, you need to set USB connection as MTP mode.

When an Android device is connected to computer, a notification should appear on the drop-down menu named as 'Connected as a …' or 'USB Charge Only'. You can tap it to open USB computer connection options and choose MTP from the list.

  • For Android 6.0, go to Settings> About phone (> Software info), tap 'Build number' 7-10 times. Back to Settings> Developer options, check 'Select USB Configuration', choose MTP. But no way to set MTP as default on Marshmallow.
  • Dial *#0808#, if you get 'USB Settings', choose MTP+ADB, then reboot.

Solution 2. Update or Install Proper Driver for Android USB Driver Not Working Problem

Sometimes Windows won't recognize Android device because the driver is corrupted and USB driver not working. Hence, you need to update or install proper driver for your device. Following are two common methods. (Check more ways to install Android USB driver.)

Update Driver for Android Phone Manually

Step 1. Go to Start> Control Panel.
Step 2. Click 'System and Security', then 'System'.

You came here because you obviously have troubles transferring files to your Android device via USB. Don't worry, you're not the first person to experience this issue. You probably get the following error message:

Lucky for you, there are only a handful of options for you to try, and you will be able to transfer files within minutes. So, without further ado, here is what you need to do to make Android file transfer work again and pass all error messages.

If you are on a Mac, go ahead and download the Android File Transfer for Mac if you haven't done that already.

How to get Android File Transfer to work

There are a few reasons why you might be getting an error message when trying to get files onto your device:

  1. USB cable doesn't support file transfer
  2. Device not set up to accept files via USB
  3. You have Samsung's Kies file transfer installed
  4. Your micro USB port is broken (sorry, can't help you with that one)

Step 1 – Enable file transfer on your Android device

This is the very first thing you must do to ensure that transferring files to your Android device is even possible.

To enable USB file transfer go to 'Settings' > 'Storage' > Tap on the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of your screen > 'USB computer connection' > Tick the box next to 'Media device (MTP)

If you think that your problem with transferring files is software-related, try connecting your device via USB to your computer, check 'Camera (PTP)' and uncheck it again. This seems to work for some people.

If you don't see the above-mentioned options in your Storage & USB settings, make sure to enable USB debugging and then follow this tricky sequence (screenshots also below):

  1. Detach USB cable from device
  2. Enable Developer Mode by going to Settings > About Phone (at the very bottom usually) > press on Build Number repeatedly until the pop-up appears
  3. Go to Settings > Developer Options
  4. Enable USB debugging
  5. Lock device (turn screen off)
  6. Connect your phone to your computer using a USB cable
  7. Unlock your Android device
  8. Swipe down to see notifications and press on 'USB for charging'
  9. From the pop-up, select File transfers
  10. Lock the device and unlock it again

Using this method you are, basically, allowing your phone's security mechanisms to accept file transfers via USB. For some reason this option is not available without enabling developer options, although it should be.

This method should work on all Android devices running stock Marshmallow 6.0+, like the new Nexus 6P or Nexus 5X. Please let me know in the comments if these steps worked for you, and which device you were using, so I can improve this guide for all those who might have the same problem in the future.

Samsung's file transfer software often causes interferences with the native Android file transfer. To uninstall Kies you will need to download the installer first (clicking the link will start the download), and just then select the 'uninstall' option within the file package.

Step 3 – Check your USB cable

Not all USB cables are created equal: Some are able to transfer files, some are not. To make sure you got a cable that can do that, go ahead and take the cable that came in the box together with your Android device. There cables are usually able to handle file transfers.

In case you can't find another USB cable to try if it works, you should check out AirDroid. This nice piece of software allows you to transfer files to your Android device with no cable at all.

If you really need a USB cable for file transfers, get yourself a good cable, it will last you quite a while (and they are quite cheap as well).
